Results & Recovery on Nose Surgery

Description of Procedure

A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose and in some cases may be performed to improve nasal airway breathing. The nose can be lengthen, widened, narrowed, or made smaller. Often an individual only requires minor changes to achieve a more harmonious profile. Some individuals have sustained a traumatic event to their nose such as a nasal fracture and require their nose to be straighten, this is also a component of a rhinoplasty. A rhinoplasty often requires unique technical skills, Dr. Majzoub has additional training in facial aesthetic surgery, the majority of which was spent on nasal surgery and facial rejuvenation techniques.

Certain individuals may require cartilage grafts to correct their aesthetic and structural nose problems, Dr. Majzoub prefers to obtain cartilage from your septum or ear if necessary, no prosthetic (foreign) material is used by Dr. Majzoub when performing a rhinoplasty. There are many different surgical approaches to performing a rhinoplasty, the most common approach by Dr. Majzoub is the open approach which permits better visualization of the tissues. A rhinoplasty is often performed with a septoplasty, this procedure is designed to straighten the septum and assist nasal breathing. In certain cases a turbinectomy or removal of the turbinates is performed if there is a compromising nasal airway issue. Dr. Majzoub will discuss all of these procedures with you at the time of your consultation. Dr. Majzoub uses various splints after performing nasal surgery, both internal and external. The procedure time varies, generally 3 hours of operative time is needed.

Recovery

Most patients do not complain of pain following a rhinoplasty, however, you will be prescribed pain medication should you require it. There is some initial discomfort with nasal breathing, the internal splints help relieve this discomfort and are a big improvement over nasal packing which Dr. Majzoub rarely uses today. Patients are encouraged to ambulate shortly after surgery and perform breathing exercises. The external splint is placed over the bridge of your nose and does not inhibit your breathing. You may experience bruising around your nose and eyes, similar to a black eye. The swelling will gradually subside over the base of your nose, the external splint is usually kept in place for 5-7 days. Dr. Majzoub generally removes internal splints between weeks 1-2, this often depends on your procedure.

Results

You will notice an improvement in your nasal airway breathing if you had a significant nasal airway obstruction. General contour changes will be evident after surgery, however, the final result will take 6-9 months to appreciate.
