The Procedure

Results & Recovery on Facial Fat Grafting

Description of Procedure

Facial scars from traumatic injuries, congenital anomalies and acne may respond to volume enhancement with fat grafting. The technique of fat grafting involves a procedure in which fat is harvested from one region of the body, often the thighs or abdomen and placed in another area.

Dr. Majzoub uses this procedure to help diminish facial scars, and augment the lips or fill in facial wrinkles. The advantage of using fat to fill in defects generally is related to its tissue acceptance by the body (this is an autogenous tissue graft or tissue graft taken from your own body) and its durability. The process is more involved than the application of dermal fillers, Dr. Majzoub utilizes a technique termed core fat grafting. Core fat grafting involves special fat harvesting techniques with atraumatic handling and placement of the fat graft to augment regions of the face (Guyuron, B., Majzoub, RK. Facial Augmentation with Core Fat Graft, A preliminary Study, Plastic and Reconstructive Surg., accepted for publication Feb 2005). The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, operative times vary, this procedure may be combined with other procedures for an enhanced effect.

Recovery

The operative site will be swollen and slightly red. Recovery is generally uneventful and requires less than one week to return to your social activities. Small sutures placed at the operative site dissolve. You may place a small amount of antibiotic cream over the incision site daily for 5 days.

Results

Results have been satisfying, most individuals report of an improvement at their operative site. Your skin will be sensitive to UV light, wear sunscreen when outside. Expect some volume loss at the operative site, some of the fat graft will be resorbed. Dr. Majzoub and his cosmetic surgery mentor are publishing data on the core fat graft technique and the long term durability of the fat graft.
