Results & Recovery on Liposuction

Description of Procedure

Liposuction involves the reduction of undesirable fat around various regions of the body that do not seem to respond to diet and exercise. Common regions of the body that liposuction may be utilized to improve contour irregularities include: the hips, outer & inner thighs, abdomen, neck and arms. This procedure is successful when treating individuals who have adequate skin tone and isolated fatty deposits. It is not a procedure designed for weight loss, individuals who are physically fit will have the best results.

Dr. Majzoub explains, “we have a lot of requests for liposuction over the hips and abdominal region, sometimes an individual needs to loose more body weight before seeking this procedure, this was the foundation behind our Wellness Clinic.” Louisville Plastic Surgery Consultants Wellness Clinic is specifically designed to help individuals achieve their body image goals through successful dietary management, fitness regimes and when necessary specifically designed surgical procedures.

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia over a sterile field, the surgeon uses small incisions (5mm) to gain access to different regions of the body. The region of the body to be treated is infiltrated with a lidocaine-epinephrine solution to minimized blood loss. A long instrument with holes in the tip is inserted through the incisions, suction is applied to the instrument. Unwanted fat is removed with each subsequent pass over the affected body region. The small incision sites are sutured closed following the procedure. The procedure time varies depending on how many body sites need to be addressed and the location of the regions with respect to patient positioning. There is a limit on how much fat may safely be removed during one operation, your surgeon will inform you of this during your consultation.

Minor variations in the instrumentation include ultrasound assisted liposuction (the instrument tip emits high frequency ultrasound), and external ultrasound assisted liposuction in which the body area to be treated is first conditioned with ultrasound. Louisville Plastic Surgery Consultants may recommend these variations depending on your physique and the body region to be treated.

Recovery

Patients should anticipate the need to take at least 2-3 days off from work for rest following the procedure. Individuals with physical jobs may need up to 10 days of rest before returning to work. Individuals should expect bruising and swelling over the treatment site. Recovery time will vary depending on the amount of liposuction performed. Most patients may return to their regular activities in 10-12 days. Patients are encouraged to ambulate after surgery and perform breathing exercises. A supportive garment is often prescribed to help with the swelling which normally lasts 4-6 weeks.

Results

The results are recognizable immediately and continue to improve as the swelling and bruising subside. Soft tissue massage is recommended to help smooth out the skin contour. Individuals should avoid sun exposure over the next 4 months.
