The Procedure

Results & Recovery on Ear Pinning

Description of Procedure

Often individuals complain that their ears are to prominent or stick out to far. An otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to set the ears closer to the head so they appear less prominent. This procedure is preformed on individuals ages 4 through adulthood. An otoplasty is performed under general anesthesia usually as an outpatient. Small crescent shaped incisions are made on the backside of the ear, ear cartilage may be removed under certain circumstances. Strategically placed sutures are used to bring the ears closer to the head. Skin incisions are generally closed with sutures that dissolve. Surgical time is usually 1-1.5 hours.

Recovery

Recovery is usually uneventful with little discomfort. Pain medication will be prescribed should you require it. If fluid builds up around the operative site, this must be drained to prevent future problems. Special dressings are applied to help support the ears and prevent unwanted movement of the ears. Swelling and bruising gradually subside over 3-4 weeks.

Results

You should note an improvement in your ears position, they should appear less prominent. Most individuals never require additional surgery. However, sometimes the supporting sutures holding the ear cartilage may tear requiring surgical revision.
