The Procedure

Results & Recovery on a Tummy Tuck

Description of Procedure

An abdominoplasty is a procedure performed to flatten or correct a protruding abdomen and remove unwanted excess skin and fat. This is accomplished by removing skin and fat in the abdominal region, relocating the belly button and tightening the abdominal muscles in the midline to remove excess laxity. This procedure can be tailored by Dr. Majzoub to meet an individual’s aesthetic goals. Dr. Majzoub explains, “there are several modifications of this procedure which depend on a patient’s body habitus and expectations, some individuals can undergo a variation of this procedure, it typically depends on how much unwanted tissue they want removed.”

Louisville Plastic Surgery Consultants offers both the mini-abdominoplasty and the standard abdominoplasty. With the mini-abdominoplasty, most of the work is performed below the belly button, muscles are tightened in the midline and the excess fat and skin below the belly button are removed. The standard abdominoplasty takes into account the entire abdominal region from the pubic area up to the lower region of the breast bone. Both procedures utilized a bikini line incision which is concealed by your underwear. This procedure generally takes 2.5-3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

Recovery

Patients should anticipate the need to take 2-3 weeks off from work. Recovery is generally overnight in a hospital setting, some individuals may choose to have a pain management ball (see FAQ’s link for details) for the first few days, typically for muscular discomfort. Patients can return to their normal activities in 4-6 weeks. Patients are encouraged to ambulate shortly after surgery and perform breathing exercises. Three small drains are left in the abdominal region and will be removed by your physician in the office. A supportive garment may be prescribed during your early post-operative recovery period.

Results

Often the results following an abdominoplasty are dramatic with an improvement in abdominal skin and muscular contour. Swelling in the abdominal region will slowly subside over the next 3 months. The results can be dramatic, the scar is hidden in the panty line.
