The Procedure

Results & Recovery on an Arm Lift

Description of Procedure

Individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight, often after a bariatric procedure, may experience difficulty with excess skin and soft tissue under the upper arms. Some individuals indicate that their excess arm skin and soft tissue interferes with their arm movement and is a cause of hygiene problems. An excessive amount of soft tissue may make it difficult for some individuals to fit comfortably in their clothing and be self-conscious about wearing summertime clothes.

A brachioplasty is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia usually as an outpatient. Depending on the extent of tissue to be reduced, the incision may be extended from the posterior aspect of the arm to the axilla (arm pit) and in some cases the incision can extend onto the lateral chest wall. The incisions may vary depending on your needs, they are usually well hidden. The operative site is closed with sutures that will be removed during your post-operative period. The procedure takes between 2-3 hours and in some cases Dr. Majzoub will combine it with other body contouring procedures.

Recovery

Patients should anticipate the need to take 1-2 weeks off from work. Recovery usually takes place in an outpatient setting. Patients can return to their normal light activities in 4-6 weeks. Patients are encouraged to ambulate shortly after surgery and perform breathing exercises. Drains are often placed at the operative sites, these will be removed by your physician in the office. In some cases a supportive garment may be prescribed during your early post-operative recovery period. Arms should be elevated at night to help with swelling.

Results

The results following a brachioplasty are often impressive with improved arm contour and skin tightness. Swelling at the operative site will gradually improve over 4-8 weeks and the scar will fade with time.
