Results & Recovery on Hair Replacement

Description of Procedure

Over 50% of American men and approximately 10% of women will experience significant hair loss during their lifetime. Hair loss or thinning is generally thought to be hereditary, it is very difficult to control. Many individuals will try different forms of medication and herbal supplements to prevent or diminish their hair loss. Hair transplantation is a procedure that is performed on individuals who have significant hair loss, bald spots or thinning hair. Donor regions of the scalp are used to transplant hair to other regions of the scalp where hair growth is diminished or no longer exists. The grafted hair is transplanted as a micro-transplant or in some cases hair-plugs which contain more hair follicles. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia as an out patient. Dr. Majzoub and his staff will outline what type of hair graft will be needed and the number of expected grafts to achieve your hair restoration goals. One important note, you must have an adequate amount of existing hair in the temporal and posterior part of your scalp to serve as donor hair. The goal of the procedure is to determine what is the most efficient way to use your donor hair to maximize coverage of your scalp. Most individuals will require between 300-3000 grafts, this often is approached through multiple procedures which are carefully planned out. A treatment session of 600-1000 grafts requires up to 3-6 hours of operative time.

Recovery

Expect some scalp swelling over both the hair transplant site and donor site. There is generally minimal discomfort, the scalp tends to heal very well because of its rich blood supply. Your surgeon will discuss the need to keep your scalp free of dust and particulate matter during the early post-op recovery period. The grafted hair is not to be combed early-on to avoid traumatizing the graft. Patients are encouraged to ambulate shortly after surgery and perform breathing exercises.
